3 Traps That Satan Uses To Destroy The Saints
And How To Avoid Them!

Because Lucifer lost the War in Heaven, he knows his fate and the fate of his followers. They have been forever denied a physical body and they will never enjoy any of the blessings we enjoy. However, there is still one thing to be decided and it is all up to us. Do we follow Christ to victory and everlasting happiness or do we fall into the traps of Satan and join in his misery?

We know right from wrong. On the whole, members of the Church strive to follow God as taught in their homes and congregations. Satan knows he cannot come into the light of our lives and tempt us to break our covenants outright. He must use his tricks, traps, and intrigue to weaken us. As humans living in a fallen world, “the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” If we allow ourselves to fall into the traps of Satan, we will find both our spirit and our flesh begins to succumb. We need to detect and avoid the traps Satan is planting constantly in our lives.

1st. Fatigue.

Being busy is NOT a commandment, but we often treat it like it is. When you are too busy, you don’t have the time to do the essential, healthy habits like proper sleeping and eating. This produces a state of fatigue; of this cycle, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf has said:

Let’s be honest; it’s rather easy to be busy. We all can think up a list of tasks that will overwhelm our schedules. Some might even think that their self-worth depends on the length of their to-do list. They flood the open spaces in their time with lists of meetings and minutia—even during times of stress and fatigue. Because they unnecessarily complicate their lives, they often feel increased frustration, diminished joy, and too little sense of meaning in their lives.
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

While this state of aggravated fatigue is common for everyone, it is especially true for young adults. We are so exhausted by the end of the day that when Satan comes to tempt us we’ve lost our strength to resist. We give Satan the added power of our fatigue and often end up losing a battle against him. Sometimes, we must cut out good things so that we can focus on the best ways to take care of ourselves and strengthen our body and spirit.

“We have to forego some good things in order to choose others that are better or best because they develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen our families.”
Elder Dallin H. Oaks

2nd. Darkness.

Darkness is the absence of light. At the end of my mission all the elders were given a “chastity talk” by our mission president,  he warned us to not stay up late, he joking said “nothing good happens after midnight, the Spirit goes to bed at midnight” we all laughed and laughed but the more I think about it the more I realize the point he was making is true. Not only is it wise, but it is a commandment to go to bed early.

…retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated. D&C 88:124

When it is dark and it is late at night we often also feel fatigued and that is when Satan makes his move, cast out the darkness, when you’re holding activities at night make them well lit, and don’t disobey the commandments and stay up late and then expect the Spirit to protect you in your disobedience.
“It is during the dark hours that some youth go to places with inappropriate environments, where music and lyrics do not allow them to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Then, under these circumstances, they become easy prey to sin.”
Elder Jairo Mazzagardi

In regards to this topic, the advice I got from my Young Men’s leader growing up is a good rule.
You can be alone, you can be in the dark, and you can be together for long period of time. But never all three at once. How long is “a long time” 5-10 minutes is all Satan needs.

3rd. Discouragement.

You can’t avoid getting discouraged, but you can avoid living in a state of discouragement. Satan does not want you to realize who you are and your potential. It makes him jealous and mad that you can progress, so he uses discouragement to keep you from moving forward. Marvin J. Ashton taught about this trap that Satan uses in  April 1988, he said;
“One of Satan’s most powerful tools is discouragement. Whisperings of “you can’t do it,” “you’re no good,” “it’s too late,” “what’s the use?” or “things are hopeless” are tools of destruction. Satan would like you to believe that because you’ve made one mistake it’s all over. He wants you to quit trying. It is important that discouragement is cast out…This may take a decided amount of work and energy, but it can be accomplished.”
Elder Marvin J. Ashton
The first step to overcoming discouragement is understanding how Satan uses it, he wants you to doubt your eternal value and to stop using the atonement. Of these feelings of discouragement Dieter F. Uchtdorf he said.
“At times we may even feel insignificant, invisible, alone, or forgotten. But always remember—you matter to Him!”
Dieter F. Uchtdorf

The key to avoiding this trap is to remember these two truths.
  • The God of the Universe is your Father, He created and loves you.
  • Jesus Christ is our Savior, He loves you and is willing to help you overcome any sin.

Armed with these two truths we can overcome any discouragement Satan throws our way, we will understand that we have a role, we can help others, and God wants us to be ourself, our best self.
