Come, Follow Me Mormon 7-9: Insights By Gogo Goff

The House of Israel.

“Know ye that ye are of the house of Israel.” Mormon 7:2

Mormon starts off Chapter 7, which is a letter to the Lamanites who he hopes one day will receive the Book of Mormon with this line. “Know ye that ye are of the house of Israel.” Why? Why would knowing that they are the house of Israel be the very first thing that Mormon would teach them? He even teaches that before repentance (which he does in the next verse). Why would he do that?

If they are part of the house of Israel, it means that they have history, the old testament is their history, of what? Their relationship with their God. Mormon realized that before you can teach repentance you must teach them about God and who they are, namely His Children. And how He is faithful in keeping His promises, once you know that God is real and your Father than repentance is natural and normal.

God is real, He has made promises to you, He will test you but never forsake you. We also are of the house of Israel, read the Old AND New Testaments, as both contain many promises God has made to our fathers. But also because you will learn your true heritage.

You are not an orphan, you are not abandoned, you have NEVER been. God has been a kind and loving Father from the beginning. Truly Mormon understood the importance of knowing our divine heritage.

The Prophets Have Seen Our Day.

“Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing.” Mormon 8:35

Mormon has died, Moroni is now writing in the book of his father. For over 10 verses Moroni is explaining the day and age when the Book of Mormon will be restored, he says he knows this because Jesus has shown him the last days. Reading this today reminded me of one of my favorite quotes about this very topic.

“God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the Second Coming of the Lord. … God has saved for the final inning some of his strongest children, who will help bear off the Kingdom triumphantly. And that is where you come in, for you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your God.

All through the ages the prophets have looked down through the corridors of time to our day. Billions of the deceased and those yet to be born have their eyes on us. Make no mistake about it—you are a marked generation. There has never been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time as there is of us.” ~Ezra Taft Benson

The Power Of Faith.

“Behold, I say unto you that whoso believeth in Christ, doubting nothing, whatsoever he shall ask the Father in the name of Christ it shall be granted him; and this promise is unto all, even unto the ends of the earth.” Mormon 9:21

On my mission I had many learning experiences, I learned first hand the reality of Lucifer and his followers. I also learned more about Jesus Christ and His dealings with other churches, including a valuable lesson from a pentecostal lady I was teaching.

She claimed that she was healed at her Pentecostal church, at first we thought it was either false or healing from the devil. But then in our companionship study, we read Mark 9:38-40 where the Apostles come to Christ saying they caught someone without the Priesthood calling on the name of Jesus to cast out a devil. Jesus’ reply was basically telling them it was ok.

In Mormon 9:21 Moroni is explaining the doctrine and power behind faith. Whereas we have the corner on the Priesthood, Moroni makes it clear that we do NOT have the corner on faith and the miracles it produces.

Miracles can and do happen in other churches and by the power of faith in Jesus Christ. When congregations or any group of people come together in faith, prayer, and fasting. Why would God not hear them?

Moroni declares the promise of faith “Is unto all” which means everyone can call upon Jesus Christ and receive the blessings of faith, no exceptions. Faith is universal to Christianity and so are the blessings!
