Come Follow Me 2 Nephi 31-33: Insights By Gogo Goff

Repentance.

“And the Father said: Repent ye, repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my Beloved Son.”
2 Nephi 31:11

It is extremely rare that God the Father personally talks to a Prophet. Normally, Jesus Christ, as the Mediator, talks to the Prophets. In the case of Nephi, he records hearing the voice of Heavenly Father. What did the voice command us to do? Repent!

The command to repent is akin to the command to come home, return, to love God more than Satan. True repentance leads us to lasting conversion. And lasting conversion will lead us home to Heaven!

The Gift of Tongues.

“Do ye not remember that I said unto you that after ye had received the Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost?”
2 Nephi 32:2

The gift of tongues is probably the most commonly experienced gift of the Spirit in the Church. One of the most frequent ways we see it in missionary work. Missionaries learning languages in only a matter of a few weeks and then being able to testify enough to convert people by the power of the Holy Ghost! Truly the Spirit carrying the message to the hearts of the hearer regardless of language barriers is a miracle!

Praying For Loved Ones.

“But I, Nephi, have written what I have written, and I esteem it as of great worth, and especially unto my people. For I pray continually for them by day, and mine eyes water my pillow by night, because of them; and I cry unto my God in faith, and I know that he will hear my cry. And I know that the Lord God will consecrate my prayers for the gain of my people…”
2 Nephi 33:3-4

I never knew what Nephi meant by this until I was a missionary. When you start to care for someone on a spiritual level it transcends mortal understanding. I saw grown men cry in prayer for their investigators, the less actives, and companions that they taught, loved and felt a bond with. I found myself doing the same thing in my prayers.

I think the biggest reason there is an “RM drop off” in spirituality is that we don’t care about people on a spiritual level, or at least we don’t care like we did while we were missionaries.

Prayers have so much more power and meaning when you pray by name and need. As I have done this, like Nephi, I have developed a love and care for them on a Spiritual level.

My prayers have become more meaning as I offer pleas for my loved ones by name and need: “Please bless Dad and Cru with their fight against cancer; please bless Royce and Sydney as they work towards the temple; and Father, please bless our single friends, Hannah, Brianna, and Amber, Father please bless them that they will be able to find someone who will love them and take care of them.”

Not only will you find an increase of love towards others as you pray, often the Lord will give you promptings that will either answer your prayers or the prayers of others.
