The Temple.

“And now, it came to pass on the morrow that king Limhi sent a proclamation among all his people, that thereby they might gather themselves together to the temple, to hear the words which he should speak unto them.”
Mosiah 7:17

In the Book of Mormon, we read of multiple times where the people gathered at the temple for instructions from their spiritual leaders, king Benjamin, king Limhi, and in Third Nephi, we read of Jesus Christ coming and teaching at the temple.

It is no different today, we like the Nephites of old can go to the temple to receive instruction from on high.

"Surely these temples are unique among all buildings. They are houses of instruction. They are places of covenants and promises." Gordon B. Hinckley

Enduring Together.

“And now, is not this grievous to be borne? And is not this, our affliction, great? Now behold, how great reason we have to mourn.”
Mosiah 7:23

Sometimes you have a good reason to mourn. There is nothing wrong with being sad, and emotional sometimes we just need to mourn. And it is ok for us mourn. Part of our baptismal covenant is that we promise to “mourn with those that mourn” and “comfort those who stand in need of comfort”.

We don’t endure alone. I love this quote about enduring together.

“I rejoice in belonging to such a loving and caring organization. No one knows better how to bear one another’s burdens, mourn with those who mourn, and comfort those who stand in need of comfort. I choose to call it “enduring together.” What happens to one happens to all. We endure together.”
Bishop Richard C. Edgley

Understanding the Scriptures.

“And he also rehearsed unto them the last words which king Benjamin had taught them, and explained them to the people of king Limhi, so that they might understand all the words which he spake.”
Mosiah 8:3

Ammon and King Limhi knew it was vital for the people to understand the teachings of the Prophets, they taught the people the scriptures, and then explained it so that they understood. It is very important that we help others understand the words of the Prophets, just like Ammon and King Limhi.

We are all at different stages of our life, and spiritual journey, we are NOT in a race against our brothers and sisters, but a war against Satan. It is OK if we don’t know everything, that is why we have Church to come together and strengthen one another in Gospel Doctrine.

The beautiful thing about our scripture study is that at any point we can choose to make it better. We don’t have to wait for New Year’s Eve to make a goal to become better, so let’s make a goal to become better!

“Every Latter-day Saint should make the study of this book a lifetime pursuit. Otherwise he is placing his soul in jeopardy and neglecting that which could give spiritual and intellectual unity to his whole life. There is a difference between a convert who is built on the rock of Christ through the Book of Mormon and stays hold of that iron rod, and one who is not” Ezra Taft Benson

Remembering the Lord

“And yet, I being over-zealous to inherit the land of our fathers, collected as many as were desirous to go up to possess the land, and started again on our journey into the wilderness to go up to the land; but we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions; for we were slow to remember the Lord our God.”
Mosiah 9:3

During New Year’s we often make goals or resolutions. The number one goal? Lose weight. It is not a bad thing to become a wise steward of your body, but if we become over-zealous like Zeniff on temporal things we can become slow to remember God.

Personally, my number one goal is to cultivate a closer and more personal relationship with God. I want to not just remember Him this year, I want this year to be the year I earned the Lord’s trust! A year that I am entrusted with His errands. I want to declare like our beloved Prophet.

“If He (the Lord) needs an errand run, (I) will run that errand for Him”
~Thomas S. Monson

"The sweetest experience I know in life is to feel a prompting and act upon it, and later find out that it was the fulfillment of someone’s prayer or someone’s need. And I always want the Lord to know that if He needs an errand run, Tom Monson will run that errand for Him." ~Thomas S. Monson.

Remembering.

“Yea, in the strength of the Lord did we go forth to battle against the Lamanites; for I and my people did cry mightily to the Lord that he would deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, for we were awakened to a remembrance of the deliverance of our fathers.”
Mosiah 9:17

Remembering is one of the most important gospel principles. Now I am not talking about remembering what you walked into the room to grab, I am talking about remembering the Goodness of the Lord.

Satan wins a battle every time he gets us to forget a blessing we have received. For soon as we forget our blessings we start to doubt the whole plan! Doubt those doubts, and remember your witness! And even when you’ve got astray the Spirit will stir in your soul a remembrance of what is right.

"Remembering may be one of the most precious gifts the Spirit can give you." Henry B. Eyring

Being “wronged”

“They were a wild, and ferocious, and a blood-thirsty people, believing in the tradition of their fathers, which is this—Believing that they were driven out of the land of Jerusalem because of the iniquities of their fathers, and that they were wronged in the wilderness by their brethren, and they were also wronged while crossing the sea;
And again, that they were wronged while in the land of their first inheritance, after they had crossed the sea…”
Mosiah 10:12-13

It is easy to feel wronged like Lamanites. Sometimes we are valid in feeling someone has wronged us, sometimes we are not valid in taking the offense. But at the end of the day being offended has never done any good.

I’ve seen countless families take offense or be “wronged” in their eyes and forsake covenants, Jesus Christ and His church. Just like the Lamanites.

Let us choose NOT to take Offense.

“He who takes offense when no offense is intended is a fool, and he who takes offense when offense is intended is a greater fool.” Brigham Young
“He who takes offense when no offense is intended is a fool, and he who takes offense when offense is intended is a greater fool.”
Brigham Young

Trusting In The Lord.

‘And now I, Zeniff, after having told all these things unto my people concerning the Lamanites, I did stimulate them to go to battle with their might, putting their trust in the Lord; therefore, we did contend with them, face to face.”
Mosiah 10:19

When Moses led the people out of Egypt everyone trusted the Lord, it was not until they were backed up against the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s armies coming to destroy them that their trust was tested. It is easy to trust in the Lord when times are good. It is the moments when it seems like His plans are not going to work out that test our trust in Him. The same thing happened to Zeniff, but his people trusted in the Lord and He provided.

So, when we like Moses or Zeniff are backed up against our Red Seas will we trust in God? Will we not only trust in His plan but also His timing?

"We cannot have true faith in the Lord without also having complete trust in the Lord’s will and in the Lord’s timing." Dallin H. Oaks
“We cannot have true faith in the Lord without also having complete trust in the Lord’s will and in the Lord’s timing.”
Dallin H. Oaks
