Caring for the soul of all men, including our enemies.

“And again, when they thought upon the Lamanites, who were their brethren, of their sinful and polluted state, they were filled with pain and anguish for the welfare of their souls.”
Mosiah 25:11

The Nephites cared about the welfare of not just their own people, but also their enemies the Lamanites.

So the question becomes, who’s welfare are we concerned about? Are you willing, like the Sons of Mosiah to do something about it?

Are you willing to labor alongside the Lord and His missionaries to hasten Salvation and bring souls to Him? The souls of your family? Friends? Those you home/visit teach? Strangers? Who are you willing to help save?

Your Calling and Election, a covenant of Eternal Life.

“Thou art my servant; and I covenant with thee that thou shalt have eternal life; and thou shalt serve me and go forth in my name, and shalt gather together my sheep.”
Mosiah 26:20

Within this verse is contained the doctrine of being promised Eternal Life. This has happened many times in both scriptures and in church history. It is commonly referred to as “Receiving your Calling and Election”. Some erroneously think it is only for Apostles and Prophets, that is not the case.

So the big question should be, “How do I make my Calling and Election sure?” Joseph Smith taught.

“After a person has faith in Christ, repents of his sins, and is baptized for the remission of his sins and receives the Holy Ghost, (by the laying on of hands), which is the first Comforter, then let him continue to humble himself before God, hungering and thirsting after righteousness, and living by every word of God, and the Lord will soon say unto him, Son, thou shalt be exalted. When the Lord has thoroughly proved him, and finds that the man is determined to serve Him at all hazards, then the man will find his calling and his election made sure.”

Having your Calling and Election made sure is one of the greatest events that could happen in our life. (Afterall 9 of the 12 Nephites asked for it). It is also the highest Temple Covenant we enter into.

Receiving one’s “Calling and Election” in this life or in the next is a requirement for exaltation.

All covenants you have made are dependent upon obedience to the associated commandments (laws). All the Priesthood ordinances and Temple covenants we have entered into are to prepare us to receive our Calling and Election. Bruce R. McConkie put it best when he said:

Repentance.

“For, said he, I have repented of my sins, and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold I am born of the Spirit.”
Mosiah 27:24

Often we forget how simple it is to repent. Alma is an example of that to repent one must confess and forsake his sins. And when that happens the atoning grace of Christ redeems them from those sins.

Preaching the Gospel.

“Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble.”
Mosiah 28:3

The sons of Mosiah teach us an important attribute of a disciple. Once you have partaken of the Atonement, you have a burning desire to share the Gospel and declare salvation to those around you.

They not only cared and declared the Gospel to their friends, they also sought to reclaim the Lamanites, who at the time were their sworn enemies. Not only did they seek to reclaim, they acted on t those desires, and we read about how great a harvest they had.

So the question is: “are you preaching the gospel with both your actions and words?”
