Being a “lifter”
“Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.”
Doctrine and Covenants 81:5
When Frederick G. Williams was called into the First Presidency, the Lord gave him guidance that is recorded as section 81 of the doctrine and covenants. In verse five, the Lord summarized his duties, and in a nutshell, he was commanded to serve others.
Frederick G. Williams was to succor, lift, and strengthen those around him. Think about that! No one, not even the members of the first presidency are not absolved from the basic command to serve and love God’s children. President Monson taught this command applies to all!”Circumstances change. Conditions vary. Unaltered is the divine command to succor the weak and lift up the hands which hang down and strengthen the feeble knees. Each of us has the charge to be not a doubter, but a doer; not a leaner, but a lifter.” Thomas S Monson

Obedience binds the Lord.
“I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.”
Doctrine and Covenants 82:10
This is one of the most important verses in the entire Doctrine and Covenants, why? Because it teaches us the nature and order of heaven, namely it teaches us God is consistent. If we obey He will bless us. Many verses allude to this principle but none state it plain as Doctrine and Covenants 82:10
Now, consequently, if others obey they will be blessed. This is how many non-Christians are blessed, they obey aspects of the Gospel, sometimes unknowingly, and God blesses them. It is important to remember, blessings always come on the Lord’s timetables. And the Lord’s timetables are designed to help teach us to become like Him! He won’t just hold back a blessing for fun.
“Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come.”

The role of a husband and father.
“2 Women have claim on their husbands for their maintenance, until their husbands are taken; and if they are not found transgressors they shall have fellowship in the church.
3 And if they are not faithful they shall not have fellowship in the church…”
Doctrine and Covenants 83:2-3
In a world that encourages men to avoid commitment or walk out on it, this section is important. In this section, the Lord outlines that one of the duties of a husband is to provide for his wife. The Lord even goes so far as to say if any husband that is transgressing this law is not worthy of fellowship in the Church! In The Family A Proclamation To The World, President Gordon B. Hinckley further explained the role of a husband and father:
“By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.”
