18 Powerful Quotes From Latter-day Prophets and Apostles Concerning Abortion.

Much debate rages regarding abortion. Here are 18 powerful quotes from Latter-day prophets and apostles concerning abortion:

“This Church of Jesus Christ opposes abortion and counsels all members not to submit to nor participate in any abortion, in any way, for convenience or to hide sins. Abortion must be considered one of the most revolting and sinful practices in this day.”
Spencer W. Kimball

“But as loud voices argue on, let us remember that those who advocate abortion have already been born! Those who freely deny God with their amoral and agnostic practices will one day find that He may just as freely deny them!”
Russell M. Nelson

"But as loud voices argue on, let us remember that those who advocate abortion have already been born! Those who freely deny God with their amoral and agnostic practices will one day find that He may just as freely deny them! " Russell M. Nelson

“In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chastity will never be out of date. We have one standard for men and women, and that standard is moral purity. We oppose and abhor the damnable practice of wholesale abortion and every other unholy and impure act which strikes at the very foundation of the home and family, our most basic institutions.”
Ezra Taft Benson

“Abortion, the taking of life, is one of the most grievous of sins. We have repeatedly affirmed the position of the Church in unalterably opposing all abortions, except in two rare instances: When conception is the result of forcible rape and when competent medical counsel indicates that a mother’s health would otherwise be seriously jeopardized.”
Spencer W. Kimball

“We oppose and abhor the damnable practice of wholesale abortion and every other unholy and impure act which strikes at the very foundation of the home and family, and our most basic institutions.”
Ezra Taft Benson

“As a servant of the Lord, I dutifully warn those who advocate and practice abortion that they incur the wrath of Almighty God”
Russell M. Nelson

"Now, as a servant of the Lord, I dutifully warn those who advocate and practice abortion that they incur the wrath of Almighty God" Russell M. Nelson

“Do we fight against the evils around us—pornography, abortion, tobacco, alcohol, drugs? Do we have the courage to stand up for our convictions? Can we truly say we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ?”
N. Eldon Tanner

“I stand in admiration of women today who resist the fashion of abortion, by refusing to make the sacred womb a tomb!”
Neal A. Maxwell

"I stand in admiration of women today who resist the fashion of abortion, by refusing to make the sacred womb a tomb!" Neal A. Maxwell

“Another contention raised is that a woman is free to choose what she does with her own body. To a certain extent this is true for all of us. We are free to think. We are free to plan. And then we are free to do. But once an action has been taken, we are never free from its consequences. Those considering abortion have already exercised certain choices.”
Russell M. Nelson

“The wrath of God is provoked by governments that sponsor gambling, condone pornography, or legalize abortion. These forces serve to denigrate women now, just as they did in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah.”
Russell M. Nelson

“I call upon the Church and all its members to forsake the evils of the world. We must shun unchastity and every form of immorality as we would a plague. We must not dam up the wellsprings of life by preventing childbirth. We must not be guilty of unrighteous and evil acts of abortion.”
Joseph Fielding Smith

“When one knows the doctrine, parenthood becomes a sacred obligation, the begetting of life a sacred privilege. Abortion would be unthinkable.”
Boyd K. Packer

"When one knows the doctrine, parenthood becomes a sacred obligation, the begetting of life a sacred privilege. Abortion would be unthinkable." Boyd K. Packer

“Whatever the laws of man may come to tolerate, the misuse of the power of procreation, the destroying of innocent life through abortion, and the abuse of little children are transgressions of enormous proportion. For cradled therein rests the destiny of innocent, helpless children.”
Boyd K. Packer

“When the controversies about abortion are debated, “individual right of choice” is invoked as though it were the one supreme virtue. That could only be true if but one person were involved. The rights of any one individual do not allow the rights of another individual to be abused. In or out of marriage, abortion is not solely an individual matter. Terminating the life of a developing baby involves two individuals with separate bodies, brains, and hearts. A woman’s choice for her own body does not include the right to deprive her baby of life—and a lifetime of choices that her child would make.”
Russell M. Nelson

“Have we strayed so far from God’s second great commandment—love thy neighbor—that a baby in a womb no longer qualifies to be loved—at least as a mother’s neighbor?”
Neal A. Maxwell

“Some justify abortions because the unborn may have been exposed to drugs or disease and may have birth defects. Where in all the world is the physically or mentally perfect man or woman? Is life not worth living unless it is free of handicaps? Experience in working with handicapped children would suggest that human nature frequently rises above its impediments.”
James E. Faust

“The ultimate act of destruction is to take a life. That is why abortion is such a serious sin.”
Dallin H. Oaks

“Abortion for personal or social convenience strikes at the heart of a woman’s most sacred powers and destroys her moral authority.”
D. Todd Christofferson

“All objections, whether they be on abortion, plural marriage, seventh-day worship, etc., basically hinge on whether Joseph Smith and his successors were and are prophets of God receiving divine revelation.”
Ezra Taft Benson

“We can see the moral contradiction of some who argue for the preservation of endangered species, but sanction the abortion of unborn humans.”
Ezra Taft Benson

The words of prophets need to be heeded because there are consequences if not.

A well-written and important essay. I wish it contained the prophetic caveat that danger to the life or health of the mother makes abortion permissible. Not good or preferable, but simply allows that pregnancy doesn't become a death sentence.

@Melanie Lahman, something interesting I learned recently is that there is literally no situation in which abortion is necessary to save the life of the mother. People always point to eptopic pregnancies when I say that, but that's not an elective abortion and isn't counted as such by the cdc because the fetus will die anyway. There is no way to save the baby at that point. The baby will die no matter what is done. But the mother doesn't have to die.

The standard still holds true of course, but it makes it clear that there really isn't any excuse for abortion. The church is very clear that it would be an EXTREMELY rare case if abortion were necessary.

I added that disclaimer to the first line so that no one can misunderstand.
