In 1970 President Joseph F. Smith issued a letter to the Church designating Monday nights to be set aside for FHE (or in other words Family Home Evenings.)
In the years since then as families have faced greater challenges, it is easy to understand the wisdom of this council. Family Home Evenings help strengthen our families for what they face throughout the week.
It is very important to include a gospel-centered message or lesson during every FHE (The length and format of the message/lesson depend on the age and needs of your family members). However, as important as the spiritual lesson is, it is also important to spend time as a family bonding and strengthening our relationships. Which is why having a fun activity after the lesson is a good idea.

As for the activity portion of your FHE it doesn’t have to cost much money or take up a lot of time. You can watch a video that ties in with the lesson, do a service project, go to the park, make and enjoy a dessert together or you can play a game.

If you are planning to play any of these games more than once, I recommend printing any of these games on cardstock to give them more lasting durability. If you are planning on playing them a lot you might also look into laminating them.
